Recorded in February 2006 by Simon Janes at Homesick studios in Brighton.
Lianne Hall is a singer-songwriter from Brighton, with a voice and style which sounds immediately familiar in its gentle warmth, yet conveys a unique emotional depth and integrity in its range and beauty. While her sound may be largely country-esque and folk-inspired, her soul is definitely built on a punk rock foundation. In the late nineties, she toured Europe extensively and released records on Flat Earth Records with Witchknot, a politicised yet experimental all female punk band with a significantly DIY attitude and open-minded approach to making music. Lianne has since self released a number of solo singles and mini-albums. This is her first full length solo release.
Lianne was a veteran of John Peel’s show, having recorded five sessions for him, including a live Christmas special at Peel Acres. In John Peel’s own words, Lianne is ‘one of the great English voices’.
Lianne has recently co-written a track for Paul ‘Orbital’ Hartnoll for his forthcoming solo album, as well as recording a duet with The Cure’s Robert Smith for the same album. Abandon Ship was recorded largely with just vocals and guitar, resulting in a stripped back record of uncluttered beauty, resonant with emotion and honesty. At times melancholic and aching, but
simultaneously soothing in its understated observations. Often peaceful and calming, but whilst retaining an air of uplifting beauty and gentle
movement, like feeling the sun on your face on a warm, breezy day.
This record is the third release on the new Local Kid label, and its first full length cd release. Local Kid is a non-profit collective working to support artists and musicians. We want to encourage a DIY ethic that creates non-hierarchical and non-threatening
spaces and environments. We aim to foster creativity and participation.
